The end of the year is a crazy and busy time, and it can be hard to find a moment to step back and take time for yourself. I’ve chosen quite a mix of styles and characters for this playlist. Some are slow and complex - music to nourish the soul and focus on the important things in life, whilst others are light and help us escape the weight of the world. Some are a mix of all things. All are great music, and I hope you enjoy.

Schubert
Schubert is a very special composer for me, and I couldn’t help but pick two movements of his works. Somehow, to me, a lot of Schubert is both happy and sad at the same time. The cello quintet is always a favourite amongst cellists as it’s rare to have two cellists in a group as small as a quintet, and both cello parts are equally satisfying to play.
Mahler 5: The Adagietto
The Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is one of the most well known movements of symphonic repertoire. It brings us back to the important things in life, slowing us down from the trivial issues we can all get absorbed in around Christmas time.
Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday Soundtrack
The soundtrack from Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday is constantly playing at my place as it’s my partner Bobby’s (Associate Principal 2nd Violin of MSO) favourite movie. The music is light-hearted and full of joy and ease. It instantly makes you feel like you’re on holiday.
Stille Nacht
Stille Nacht is probably my favourite Christmas carol. It takes me back to when I was a child and my dad played organ at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
I hope this playlist brings you joy, and helps you get through the season!
