Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
About this performance
Explore the stuff of dreams in this epic concert of escapist fantasy under the baton of Jaime Martín and 2023 Ensemble in Residence Gondwana Voices.
- Australian composer Michael Atherton's ethereal Shall we Dream? opens this performance, featuring the return of youth choir Gondwana Voices to the MSO stage as part of their 2023 residency.
- Mendelssohn's magical music for A Midsummer Night's Dream will transport you to Shakespeare's forest of fairies. Full of memorable melodies including the famous Wedding March, this blissful work never fails to delight listeners.
- French composer Berlioz’s epic Symphonie Fantastique is a prime example of programmatic music – that is, music with a clear story that the music seeks to evoke. It follows the protagonist's melodious, energetically-heaving, and sometimes horrifying fever dream of love, death, and the supernatural.
Duration: approx. 2 hours and 10 minutes including interval
*Please note: Lili Boulanger's Psalm 129 and Brett Dean's Vexations and Devotions will no longer be performed at these concerts.
