MSO Classroom is an exclusive opportunity for Government school students nominated to take part in the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES), supported by the Victorian Government. Conductor and MSO cellist Nicholas Bochner and specialist co-presenters deliver rich and stimulating content through live, interactive sessions. Students will be inspired by rich content and interactive discussion. All this alongside world quality, pre-recorded MSO performances.

The MSO is proud to extend this opportunity to all secondary students.

Join Nicholas Bochner and special guest (TBC) as they explore the collaboration of Australian Art Orchestra and Indigenous composers and performers the Wilfred Bros’ work WATA, performed live with the MSO in 2021. The music is built upon the ceremonial song cycles (manikay) of north-eastern Arnhem Land.

Students will:

  • Hear about the composer’s personal experience of Indigenous cultural practices
  • See recent MSO footage to illustrate musical and cultural awareness
  • Learn about and understand issues for Australia and its Indigenous people

Stravinsky The Firebird

Dive into the music of two seminal composers. Guided by presenter Nicholas Bochner and conductor Graham Abbott, students will explore two strikingly different works: Stravinsky's The Firebird and Australian composer Matthew Hindson’s Speed. Both works are large scale, exciting and unashamedly distinct and this event will give insight to students to provide a pathway to understanding these ground-breaking works.

Suitable for: Students in Years 9-12 (This event will also be suitable for high ability students in Year 8 nominated for the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series)

Stravinsky's Petrushka

Stravinsky’s ground-breaking work provides the perfect backdrop to discuss Russian folklore and history with cellist/conductor Nicholas Bochner and special guest (TBC). Join them as they explore the themes, music and of course, dance in this incredible ballet.

Students will:

  • Delve deep into the history of early 20th century Russia
  • See recent MSO footage to support historical understanding
  • Make cross-curricular links between English, History and Music in broad social contexts

VCE Exam Preparation

Students join Nicholas Bochner in a timely in-depth conversation with VCE Music Specialist James Le Fevre (Head of Music, Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School) with guidance in preparing for and succeeding in all areas of upcoming Music exams.

The repertoire for study during the session is John Adams’ Harmonielehre as performed in MSO’s 2021 season. Discussion will be on all areas of VCE music and provide opportunity for interaction with presenters.

Students will:

  • Hear detailed insights from the experienced musician and teacher perspective
  • See recent MSO footage to support discussion
  • Be guided through practical examples focusing on exam outcomes

Suitable for: VCE Music students or Year 9 or 10 students interested in pursuing VCE Music.
